If you are putting your body through the ringer at our spot on the Katy Freeway, you have to stop thinking about food as a reward or a way to satisfy a bored palate. When you are hitting those Echo Bikes and rowing until your lungs burn, you are essentially asking your body to perform like a top-tier athlete. That means your dietary philosophy needs to shift away from restrictive, fad-based dieting and toward a framework of performance fueling. In my experience, the best approach for anyone at Illuminate Sweat is a centered, high-protein, nutrient-dense protocol that prioritizes metabolic flexibility.
The biggest mistake I see people make in Houston is trying to do high-intensity work while on a zero-carb or extreme calorie-deficit diet. It is like trying to drive a truck to Dallas on an empty tank. You might make it a few miles, but eventually, you are going to stall out, and your recovery will be non-existent. You need carbohydrates. They are the high-octane fuel your muscles scream for during those explosive kettlebell swings. My opinion is that you should time those carbs around your workout. Eat them before to give yourself that spark and after to refill the stores you just depleted. If you aren’t eating enough to support the work, you aren’t getting stronger, you are just breaking yourself down.
Protein is the other non-negotiable pillar. If you want that lean, defined look that everyone in our group sessions is chasing, you need to be hitting a significant protein goal every single day. Think of it as the construction crew that comes in at night to fix the damage you did during the day. Whether it is lean beef, chicken, or plant-based sources, you need enough of it to ensure that the “sweat” you put in actually results in muscle growth rather than just fatigue. I have seen so many people spin their wheels for months because they were working out like warriors but eating like birds.
I am also a huge advocate for a “clean but sustainable” philosophy. This means eighty percent of what you eat should come from the earth or something that had a heartbeat, while the other twenty percent allows you to live your life in a food-centric city like Houston. If you try to be perfect, you will fail by week three. But if you focus on whole foods, healthy fats like those found in avocados or olive oil, and plenty of greens to fight the inflammation we create in the gym, your body will respond in ways you didn’t think were possible at sixty or even seventy years old.
At the end of the day, the best diet is the one that makes you feel unstoppable during the last five minutes of a Mike or Brandon session. You want to walk into that room feeling energized and walk out feeling like you have the nutrients in your system to heal. It is about respecting the machine. When you align your plate with the intensity of your training, the results don’t just trickle in; they flood in. You will see it in the mirror, feel it in your joints, and notice it in your mood long after you have left the studio.

The Sweat Standard: The perfect workout in one hour.
This class combines cardiovascular training with strength training using a variety of equipment such as barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, battle ropes, and resistance bands. You will spend 50% of the class working with weights and the other 50% on a cardio machine. The definitive workout for real results!
Sweat Express:
A 45 minute class. The format is very similar to the Standard class but with shorter sets.
Great for those who want to burn calories but are short on time!
Sweat Just Lift:
A 60 minute class for those looking to focus exclusively on strength training.
The programming for this class is aligned with the Standard class to ensure you do not miss any of the primary lifts. For example, on Mondays the focus is on quads and abs. This is a great option for those who have other cardiovascular training options during the week.
The new space has an intense focus on recovery, performance, and community, offering ice baths and saunas, which is something unique for the Houston area.
Recovery and Performance: Consultations available every Friday at the studio for treatments focused on muscle and joint recovery.
HYROX Community: Workouts and celebrations geared toward athletes participating in HYROX.
