What do I eat before showing up to an intense group training block?

Fueling for a session at the studio on the Katy Freeway is a bit of a balancing act because if you get it wrong, the Sweat Standard will let you know very quickly. You are about to walk into an hour of heavy kettlebell swings, barbell complexes, and high intensity intervals on the treadmill. I usually suggest a mix of fast acting carbohydrates and a little bit of protein about ninety minutes before you pull into the parking lot. A classic move is a piece of sourdough toast with a little bit of almond butter and some sliced banana. The bread and fruit give you the immediate fuel you need to handle the cardio blocks, while the healthy fats in the nut butter keep your blood sugar from crashing halfway through the lifting portion.

If you are one of those people who hits the 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM classes, you might not have the stomach for a full meal. In that case, keep it even lighter. A handful of berries or even just a high quality dates can provide enough natural sugar to wake up your system without sitting heavy. Many of the regulars near the Energy Corridor swear by a simple protein shake mixed with some oats. It is easy on the digestion and ensures you have the amino acids in your system to start the recovery process even while you are still slamming the battle ropes.

Hydration is the part that most people in Houston overlook until it is too late. You cannot start drinking water when you walk through the door and expect it to do anything for you. You need to be sipping throughout the day leading up to your evening session, or drinking a good sixteen ounces as soon as you wake up for a morning class. Because the intensity at Illuminate is so high, you are going to lose a lot of fluid. If you show up even slightly dehydrated, your heart rate is going to skyrocket and those treadmill intervals are going to feel twice as hard as they should.

The biggest mistake you can make is trying something brand new on a day you plan to push your limits. Stick to what you know your body handles well. Some people thrive on a small bowl of oatmeal, while others prefer a simple Greek yogurt with a bit of honey. The key is to avoid anything too acidic or overly fibrous right before you start jumping and sprinting. You want to feel light, sharp, and ready to move. When you get the nutrition right, the weights feel lighter and the music sounds better because you actually have the capacity to meet the energy of the room. It turns the workout from a struggle for survival into a chance to actually see what your body can do when it is fueled like a machine.

Then you have the Just Lift sessions. This is for the days when you have already done your cardio elsewhere or you just want to focus on building raw power. It is an hour of pure strength work. They align the focus of these classes with the Standard sessions, so if Monday is quad and core day, you are hitting those muscle groups regardless of which class you pick. This session is an absolute lifesaver for people who already run, bike, or get their cardio in other ways and just need a dedicated place to move heavy weight safely.

Our programs

The Sweat Standard: The perfect workout in one hour.
This class combines cardiovascular training with strength training using a variety of equipment such as barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, battle ropes, and resistance bands. You will spend 50% of the class working with weights and the other 50% on a cardio machine. The definitive workout for real results!

Sweat Express:
A 45 minute class. The format is very similar to the Standard class but with shorter sets.
Great for those who want to burn calories but are short on time!

Sweat Just Lift:
A 60 minute class for those looking to focus exclusively on strength training.
The programming for this class is aligned with the Standard class to ensure you do not miss any of the primary lifts. For example, on Mondays the focus is on quads and abs. This is a great option for those who have other cardiovascular training options during the week.
