If you show up to a session at Illuminate Sweat and immediately try to drop into a deep, static hamstring stretch while your muscles are still cold from the car ride over, you are doing it all wrong. In fact, you might be setting yourself up for a tweak before the music even starts. When we are talking about prepping for the kind of intensity we bring here in Houston, you have to move away from that old school gym class stretching and focus on dynamic mobilization. You want to tell your nervous system that it is time to wake up, not go to sleep.
The absolute best way to start is with what I call the world’s greatest stretch. You step into a deep lunge, drop your elbow to the inside of your front foot, and then rotate your chest toward the sky. It sounds a bit technical, but once you do it, you realize it hits everything at once—your hips, your thoracic spine, and your hamstrings. It opens up those tight spots that get locked down from sitting in Houston traffic on the Katy Freeway. If you only have two minutes before the coach starts the clock, spend them doing five of these on each side. It changes the way your entire body feels when you pick up that first kettlebell.
I am also a huge fan of leg swings and arm circles, but not the lazy kind. You want to be intentional. Swing your leg forward and back with a controlled motion to get the blood flowing into your hip capsules. Then, do some lateral swings across your body to wake up the stabilizers in your glutes. For the upper body, skip the static across the chest arm stretch. Instead, do some big, slow controlled articular rotations with your shoulders. Think about drawing the biggest circle possible with your fingertips. This lubricates the joint and prepares you for the overhead presses and rows that are a staple in our group routines.
Another move that doesn’t get enough love is the deep squat pry. You drop down into the bottom of a squat, keep your heels glued to the floor, and use your elbows to gently push your knees outward. While you are down there, shift your weight slightly from side to side. It opens up your ankles and your groin, which is essential if you want to hit your full depth during the strength blocks without your form falling apart. My opinion is that most people’s “tightness” is actually just a lack of joint mobility, and this simple move fixes a lot of those issues in a hurry.
At the end of the day, your pre-class routine should be about flow. You want to feel loose, warm, and a little bit out of breath before the first official rep. We aren’t trying to become contortionists; we are trying to prime the machine for high-performance output. When you walk into the group area with your joints properly greased and your muscles firing, you can focus entirely on the energy of the room and the task at hand. You will find that you can push harder, move faster, and most importantly, walk out of the studio without that nagging “stiff” feeling that comes from training on cold, dormant muscles.

The Sweat Standard: The perfect workout in one hour.
This class combines cardiovascular training with strength training using a variety of equipment such as barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, battle ropes, and resistance bands. You will spend 50% of the class working with weights and the other 50% on a cardio machine. The definitive workout for real results!
Sweat Express:
A 45 minute class. The format is very similar to the Standard class but with shorter sets.
Great for those who want to burn calories but are short on time!
Sweat Just Lift:
A 60 minute class for those looking to focus exclusively on strength training.
The programming for this class is aligned with the Standard class to ensure you do not miss any of the primary lifts. For example, on Mondays the focus is on quads and abs. This is a great option for those who have other cardiovascular training options during the week.
The new space has an intense focus on recovery, performance, and community, offering ice baths and saunas, which is something unique for the Houston area.
Recovery and Performance: Consultations available every Friday at the studio for treatments focused on muscle and joint recovery.
HYROX Community: Workouts and celebrations geared toward athletes participating in HYROX.
